The ideal time to start solid foods is when your baby has completed 6 months (at 180 days), meaning at the start of their 7th month. Starting solids too early can strain your baby's sensitive stomach, as exclusive breastfeeding or formula milk is completely sufficient until 6 completed months. Before starting, ensure your baby shows readiness signs like sitting up with support, having good neck control, and showing curiosity toward your plate.
When you start, introduce just one single-ingredient meal a day in small quantities. Excellent Indian first foods include:
- Slightly runny, mashed moong dal soup or soft rice kanji
- Steamed and pureed apple or ripe mashed banana
- Boiled and pureed lauki (bottle gourd) or carrots
