An AFI of 3 is considered quite low (oligohydramnios), so please contact your treating gynecologist immediately. Do not panic, but this requires prompt medical evaluation. Depending on your current week of pregnancy, your doctor will guide you on the safest next steps, which may include hospital admission for IV fluids, prescribed supplements, frequent fetal monitoring, or planning a timely delivery if you are close to your due date. While you get in touch with your doctor, take complete bed rest, preferably lying on your left side to maximize blood and nutrient flow to the baby. Start sipping on plenty of fluids right away, including plain water, fresh coconut water (nariyal pani), and fresh homemade buttermilk. Most importantly, keep a very strict count of your baby’s movements and go straight to the hospital emergency if you notice reduced kicks or any fluid leakage.
