Please stay calm, standard seasonal changes often trigger this in 7-year-olds. First, check his temperature using a thermometer. If the fever is high, do a lukewarm water sponge bath on his forehead, palms, and feet—never use cold water. If your pediatrician has prescribed a standard age-appropriate paracetamol, you can give that to bring down the fever. Keep him in light, breathable cotton clothes and elevate his head slightly with a pillow to ease congestion and help him sleep.
Ensure he stays hydrated with small sips of warm water or warm soup. For night-time cough relief, you can place a wet towel near the fan or use a steam vaporizer in the room to add moisture to the air. Keep a close watch on his breathing. If you notice any chest indrawing, severe lethargy, or persistent high fever that doesn't drop with medication, head to an urgent care center immediately. Otherwise, visit your pediatrician first thing in the morning.
